Lordes made the first of her many illegal films during October 1984, when she appeared in What Gets Me Hot! With Tom Byrne, who later became her boyfriend off-screen. At first she only appeared in a non-sex role, but was later replaced by a hardcore scene. In her next film, Those Young Girls, she appeared in a sex role alongside Harry Reams and Ginger Lynn. After appearing in the porno parody of the film Splash, Talk Dirty to Me Part III with John Leslie at the age of 16, which won the AVN Award for Best Picture, Lorde was hailed as the "Princess of Porn". She went on to become one of the highest paid porno actresses of the time, earning over $1,000 a day.

In addition to her work in porn, she also appeared in the music video for "Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'" by the heavy metal band Helix. Lordes continued to make more films until the autumn of 1985, when she tried to leave the industry at the age of 17, but returned a few months later. Later, she met Stuart Dale, who became her boyfriend, manager, and business partner. he formed the Tracy Lords Company. Dale and Lord's struck a distribution deal with C Adler, an industry veteran running Vantage International, that they would produce three films for the company. During March, the first TLC feature, Tracy Tex Tokyo, was released. The second, Beverly Hills Copulator, was released later, and the third film, Screamer, (Eddie DiZiole) was shelved.

She lied to law enforcement, photographers, producers, directors, coworkers and the general public for two years. Her movie agency and X-Citation Video, Inc. The owners were arrested. She was taken into protective custody and high-profile lawyer Leslie Abramson was hired. District Attorney's investigators searched Lord's Redondo Beach home as well as the Sun Valley offices of Vantage International Productions and the Sherman Oaks offices of modeling agent Jim South on July 10.  Tracy Lords I love you

The only film legally available in the United States, when authorities requested that all minor films previously been made by her as a minor, was Tracy, I Love You,  . She sold her rights to Tracy, I Love You in early 1987 for over $100,000. This action resulted in the claim that she herself tipped the authorities to seek exemption from prosecution, while being the only woman to benefit from the film. Lordes denied this notion in her autobiography, saying that she was reluctant to sell the rights, as she was trying to become a mainstream actress at the time, and wanted no older films still available. "Tracy, I Love You" was the last porn film to feature Tracy Lords. Lords was offered a hefty sum of money to continue with porn, but she declined the requests.

Leslie Jay, a spokeswoman for Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione, also said that Lords showed identification indicating that she was over 18 years old before taking illegal photographs for the September 1984 issue. When investigators used Lord's forged birth certificates and fake state identification cards to locate the real Christie Nussman, Nussman said her birth certificate had been stolen a few years earlier and that a fraudster had officially taken her The name was made up in a fake way. Two adults who knew Lords but who requested anonymity said they saw a photo of her in the adult magazine Velvet during July 1984, and called the district attorney's office to inform officials that she was less of age, but an investigator told them, "There's 'nothing we can do about it'."

Lordes decided to focus on acting after spending several months in therapy. She enrolled at the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute, where she studied method acting for three months. After completing acting classes, Lords landed an ad in The Hollywood Reporter looking for representation. She was approached by Fred Westheimer and although the agency declined to officially represent her, she decided to send her out on some auditions. As a result, she was offered a guest appearance in an episode of the television series WiseGuy. Although the film failed at the box office, it did well in video sales, and based on that success, Lorde was offered to appear in Winnorski's next film, The Haunting of Morela (1989). However, Lordes turned down the offer because of the need for a nude scene, as she was trying to establish herself as a serious actress. She also signed with a modeling agency under her birth name Nora Kuzma and appeared on two covers of Joe Weider's magazine Muscle & Fitness.
